Learn how to select the correct pipework
Hydraulic pipework design guide
How to use the pipework sizing guide
1. Use the above app to size the appropriate pipework for your worked project example.
• Set the maximum flow rate using the left-hand slidebar.
• Set the maximum working pressure.
• Set the maximum fluid velocity. There should be a different standard value for the pressure, return and suction lines of every hydraulic system.
• Select the pipe material.
• Select the most appropriate pipework size from the list provided.
• Repeat for the pressure, return and suction lines and compare with your project example if one is available.
For more details on using this app see our pipework design guide section.
Experiment 1: There are many different types of hydraulic fittings available.
Question 1: Why would you select one fitting type over another?
Experiment 2: Pipework is sized to ensure the flow rate does not exceed a specific fluid velocity.
Question 2: Is the maximum rated fluid velocity the same in all pipes?
Experiment 3: Hydraulic fittings have continuously developed over many years with significant improvements to reduce leakage and failures.
Question 3: Describe some of the improved features of modern fittings?
